This is because when a small amount of moisture comes into contact with coal, it releases moist heat that raises the temperature of the coal. The lower the initial moisture content of the coal, the higher its moist heat value. As the temperature of the coal rises, local thermal feedback is generated in its surroundings; upon contact with oxygen, this leads to autothermal oxidation, which further increases the temperature and thus triggers autothermic reactions.
