In the originally designed coke ovens, for those with a 6-meter top-loading design and those with a 5.5-meter ramming design, there are four rigid contact points between the protective plate and the furnace columns; in other words, the protective plate has four protrusions, the furnace columns press against these protrusions, and the small springs on the furnace columns push against the protective plate. This ensures the verticality of the protective plate. The current design no longer has these 4 protrusions. There is elastic force everywhere between the furnace column and the protective plate. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly measure the gap between the furnace column and the protective plate in order to determine the inclination of the protective plate and prevent smoking between the furnaces. Of course, there are other reasons as well. I have seen large coke ovens over 7 meters in length; after three years of operation, the protective plates deformed and pressed against the furnace columns, which essentially rendered their elastic properties ineffective.
