Progress of the Top 10 New Coal-based Ethylene Glycol Projects in Q1 2017 Author/Source: Date: 2017-04-11 Clicks: 10 China still needs to import large amounts of ethylene glycol, which presents good opportunities for the development of coal-based ethylene glycol production. As the operational performance of the existing coal-based ethylene glycol demonstration projects improves and they are able to operate at high loads stably, coal-based ethylene glycol remains highly competitive even at low oil prices, thereby driving continuous growth in investment in new coal-based ethylene glycol projects. In the first quarter of 2017, the progress of the top ten new coal-based ethylene glycol projects in China was as follows: 1. In January 2017, a meeting was held to initiate the design work for the 400,000 tons per year ethylene glycol production facility of Daqing Hegong New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. The project is in the stage of preparing the process package and conducting design work, and progress is going well; it is expected to be completed and put into operation by December 2018. 2. In February 2017, the first public announcement regarding public participation in the environmental impact assessment for Anhui Haoyuan Chemical Group’s project to produce 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year from syngas was made. The project is located in the new factory of Anhui Haoyuan Chemical Group Co., Ltd., within the Fuyang Coal-based New Materials Industrial Park. 3. In February 2017, Jiangsu Shuangduo Chemical Co., Ltd. submitted an environmental impact assessment report for a project aimed at upgrading and relocating operations from the city center to this industrial park; this report was approved by the Environmental Protection Bureau of Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. The scale of this project is a technical upgrade project with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol, 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia, 520,000 tons of urea, and 50,000 tons of methanol as a by-product. 4. In February 2017, Shenhua Yulin Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. issued a tender for the environmental impact assessment project related to the construction of a 400,000 tons per year synthetic gas-to-ethylene glycol production facility. The project is located within the reserved site for the existing Shenhua Shaanxi methanol downstream processing facility; the raw materials (CO, H2) required by the plant, as well as the auxiliary materials and utility services, are provided by the CTC project. 5. In February 2017, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new-generation coal-to-ethylene glycol industrial pilot project at the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was held in Xingren County, Guizhou Province. Guizhou Xinchun Technology Development Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd. will strive to advance the project so that it can be handed over in mid-August 2017, with trial operation starting in October. 6. In March 2017, Lihua Yi Group’s 200,000 tons per year synthetic gas-based ethylene glycol production project commenced operations. The project is located in the Lijin Economic Development Zone of Shandong Province, with a total investment of approximately 1.96 billion yuan. 7. In March 2017, a kick-off meeting was held for the 240,000 tons per year synthetic gas-to-ethylene glycol project of Inner Mongolia Yigao Coal Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. The construction site is located in the Dalu Chemical Industry Park in Zhungeer Banner, with completion and operation scheduled for October 2018. In March 2017, Shanghai Danmao Chemical Technology Center’s project to produce 200,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year was set up in Hangjin Banner, Ordos. The project will utilize surplus steam, syngas, oxygen and other resources generated by the Yitai 1.2 million-ton fine chemicals project to build an ethylene glycol plant with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons. Currently, the project is in the preliminary stages such as site selection, with a construction period of 18 months. 9. In March 2017, the integrated chemical processing project for the selective utilization of long-flame coal by Xinjiang Shengwo Energy Development Co., Ltd. (a project involving 400,000 tons of polyethylene and 400,000 tons of coal-based ethylene glycol) began construction. It is located in the 55 Industrial Park in Kuitun City, the 7th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. 10. In March 2017, public information indicated that Lvyuan State-owned Assets Company of the Second Division of the Production Corps and Jinchuan Energy Group Company collaborated on a project to produce 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year, along with 130,000 tons of polycarbonate and 50,000 tons of polyethylene as by-products. The proposed location for the project is at Jinchuan Mining Company in Korla City, Xinjiang, with an investment amount of 6 billion yuan.
