I have a system that produces a mixture of 90% methanol and 10% water, at a rate of 5–8 tons per hour, with a temperature of around 100 degrees. I would appreciate advice from experts on the simplest way to separate these components Is it necessary to use a distillation tower? !
It depends on your purity requirements; if a high level of purity is required, multiple stages of balancing are needed, and multiple stages of balancing correspond to distillation towers
The requirements for methanol are not high; 98% or more is sufficient. The requirements for water are higher, as it relates to wastewater treatment issues! !

If the required purity of the separated methanol is not high, distillation may not be necessary; instead, extractive distillation could be a better option. A water-insoluble solvent with a boiling point between that of water and methanol is added. Feed is introduced at the middle of the tower; crude methanol is obtained at the top, while the bottom of the tower contains a mixture of the solvent and water. Since water and the solvent are insoluble in each other, excess water separates out at the bottom after stratification, and the solvent is recycled. You can use a design institute and simulation software to do the calculations.
