Problems with the gas distributor at the inlet of a methanol synthesis tower: In one methanol production unit’s reactor, the absence of a gas distributor at the inlet caused the ceramic balls covered by the insulating layer to be blown away; consequently, the insulating-layer catalyst was repeatedly worn down and pulverized by the flowing gas.
Catalyst pulverization leads to uneven gas distribution in the bed and an increase in resistance.
If there are no conditions to install a distributor, one can try replacing it with larger ceramic balls and adding a steel mesh
Shouldn’t the porcelain ball be secured with wire mesh and grating plates? The ceramic ball functions as a gas distributor
There is a stainless steel mesh under the original ceramic ball, but none on top of it.
