Dear fellow seafarers: I have a question, and I hope everyone will answer it actively. Can methanol produced from industrial CO2 and green hydrogen be defined as a green alcohol? What are the market price and trends for green alcohol? If it cannot be defined as green alcohol, how can gray alcohol be converted into green alcohol? And by how much can the price differ between the two? Thank you!
Green methanol = renewable hydrogen (green hydrogen) + CO2 capture from biomass energy; in other words, the CO2 comes from biomass-related industries such as straw power generation. Green methanol = renewable hydrogen (green hydrogen) + directly captured CO2, meaning the CO2 comes from direct air capture (DAC). Low-carbon e-methanol = renewable hydrogen (green hydrogen) + CO2 captured from industrial emissions. If CO2 comes from other industrial emissions, such as power plants, cement factories, steel mills, etc., it is non-renewable CO2. Even if the hydrogen is green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, it cannot be classified as “renewable methanol” or “green” methanol; it can only be referred to as “blue” methanol or “low-carbon” methanol.
Green methanol can have its own price. Currently, it is mainly used as a marine fuel, but specialized certification is required; the identity of the methanol must be determined first
