Methanol synthesis catalysts are generally copper-based catalysts that are sensitive to oxygen and moisture in the air. If nitrogen purging is not carried out, oxygen and water vapor from the air will penetrate into the system, which may lead to oxidation of the catalyst, a decrease in its activity, or even its degradation and loss of functionality. Prolonged exposure to oxygen and moisture can also cause corrosion of the equipment. The 12-hour replacement time mentioned in the operating procedures is likely based on considerations for the safe operation of the equipment and catalyst, as well as empirical estimates of the potential hazards caused by oxygen and moisture entering the system. This time interval may also be related to the evaluation of factors such as past accident investigations, catalyst stability tests, and the corrosion resistance of equipment materials. .
In the event of an accident and the system is shut down, the methanol synthesis system should automatically depressurize to 1.0 MPa. It is acceptable to maintain the catalyst bed temperature above 200°C without replacement.
