The Coal Science and Technology Research Institute has applied for a patent for a method of separating p-ethylphenol oil fractions in order to obtain defumed phenol oil and phenolic substances. According to information from the Intellectual Property Office dated August 18, 2025, the Coal Science and Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. submitted an application for a patent titled “Method for separating p-ethylphenol oil fractions to obtain defumed phenol oil and phenolic substances”; the publication number is CN120483857A, with the application date being April 2025. The patent abstract indicates that this invention falls within the field of coal chemistry and the synthesis and separation of organic products, and specifically relates to a method for separating m-pentyphenol oil fractions to obtain dephenolated oil and phenolic substances. The present invention discloses a method for separating m-p-ethylphenol-containing phenol oil fractions to obtain dephenolated phenol oil and phenolic substances. Phenolic coal tar is subjected to vacuum distillation to yield a phenol oil fraction at 170–230°C; this phenol oil fraction is then further distilled under vacuum to obtain an m-p-ethylphenol-containing phenol oil fraction at 217–218.5°C. Under the action of a catalyst, the m-ethylphenol and p-ethylphenol present in this fraction have their ethyl groups removed, resulting in a mixture primarily composed of phenol and dephenolated m-p-ethylphenol oil. Since the boiling point of the dephenolated phenol oil obtained after the removal of phenolic substances is 217.5–218°C, while the boiling point of phenol is 183°C, it is easy to separate phenol from the dephenolated phenol oil through distillation, thereby allowing the two to be separated from each other.
