What is the difference between corrosion inhibitors and corrosion and scale inhibitors? Is it just the name that’s different, or are the active ingredients different? I seek advice from experts everywhere.
Corrosion inhibitors: Chemicals used to address corrosion issues in pipelines and heat exchanger tubes. Scale inhibitors: For example, in hydrogenation units, the common injection point for scale inhibitors is at the inlet of the hydrogenation feed pump, in order to prevent scaling due to high exchange rates. The feed to the hydrogenation unit contains a high amount of sulfides and nitrides, as well as small amounts of gums, asphaltenes, heavy metals, dissolved oxygen, and solid suspensions such as coke powder, corrosion products, and inorganic salts of metals. Scaling occurs during heat exchange in the feedstock heat exchanger, which reduces its heat transfer efficiency and increases the load on the heating furnace. Therefore, a scale inhibitor needs to be added. Hydrogenation units are characterized by high temperature, high pressure, and exposure to hydrogen. Since the purpose of their processing is to remove undesirable elements such as S, N, and O from hydrocarbons, compounds like H2S and NH4Cl are formed in the reaction products, causing severe corrosion during the condensation process at the top of the distillation columns. Fractionation corrosion inhibitors are composed of film-forming agents and neutralizing agents, among others. The main function of the neutralizing agents is to raise and stabilize the pH value of the solution, while the film-forming agents interact with the metal surface through coordination and covalent bonds to form a dense protective layer. This layer effectively prevents dew point formation and under-scale corrosion in the phase-change areas of the cooling systems in fractionation towers, thereby extending the service life of the equipment and ensuring safe operation of the production facilities over extended periods of time.
