Although boiler water is treated, it still contains small amounts of hardness salts (Ca^+2, Mg^+2). These residual hardness salts, once they enter the furnace, react with other ions to form scale that adheres to the tube walls or the walls of the steam drum. To prevent this from happening, trisodium phosphate must be added as a treatment agent. Acid-base neutralization to prevent scaling in the drum
Adding trisodium phosphate to the boiler water not only causes the calcium and magnesium salts in it to form non-adherent, loose sludge, but it also helps to adjust the alkalinity of the boiler water, keeping its pH value within the range specified by the regulations.
