According to the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, on March 11, a large-scale solid hydrogen storage device that had been completed with hydrogen filling was successfully loaded onto a ship at the Waigaoqiao Port area in Shanghai, marking a new breakthrough in the field of hydrogen storage and transportation for China’s independently developed solid hydrogen storage technology. The magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage equipment shipped this time is destined for Malaysia, as part of a formal commercial order from an overseas customer; it will be used in local hydrogen energy applications. According to the company’s preliminary estimates, the scale of hydrogen transportation for related projects in 2026 will be around 500 tons. For a long time, large-scale and long-distance transportation of hydrogen has faced significant challenges due to factors such as costs, safety, and efficiency in storage and transportation. The magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage devices shipped this time utilize magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage materials and hydrogen absorption/release control technologies developed independently in China. They enable the storage and transportation of hydrogen under normal temperature and pressure conditions; each tank can store up to 1 ton of hydrogen, with a cycle life of over 3,000 cycles, offering high safety levels and efficient storage and transportation capabilities. To ensure the smooth shipment of hydrogen storage equipment, under the guidance of the Maritime Administration of the Ministry of Transport, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration and the Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, in response to the needs of enterprises and taking into account the characteristics of the equipment, transportation conditions, and safety requirements, organized experts to conduct technical evaluations. These evaluations covered the structural integrity of the equipment, the configuration of safety accessories, emergency response measures, as well as the conditions necessary for safe transportation, providing comprehensive guidance throughout the entire process. At the loading site, the maritime authorities dispatched specialized personnel to be on site throughout the process, working closely with the company to carry out the loading operations and providing real-time technical support. This ensured the safe and smooth loading of the equipment, thereby facilitating the successful completion of the transportation task. The industry believes that the successful shipment of this large-scale solid hydrogen storage device after it was filled with hydrogen further expands the application scenarios for hydrogen storage and transportation, providing a new practical example for promoting the development of the hydrogen industry chain and international cooperation in green and low-carbon technologies.
