Corrosion caused by chloride ions, acids such as HCl and H2S, and Na+ introduced through the injection of alkalis can affect the activity and type of catalysts. Moreover, these substances cause scaling in heat exchangers and pipeline equipment. Ammonia (or amines) is injected to neutralize HCl and H2S in the distillate from the top of the distillation tower, as well as to adjust the pH value of the condensate water; this helps to reduce corrosion while also enhancing the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors. Above the water dew point temperature, chloride-containing compounds may deposit as salts on the pipe walls, leading to severe under-scale corrosion and pitting
