According to Sinochem News, the coal-coke hydrogen production unit for the Zhenhai Refining & Chemicals expansion project, for which Sinopec Ningbo Engineering Co., Ltd. provided the process packages, basic design, and EPC turnkey services, has won the second prize in the category of petroleum and chemical industry engineering design within the 2025 National Outstanding Engineering Survey and Design Awards. The plant utilizes the SE Dongfang water-coal (coke) slurry gasification technology, which requires 2,500 tons of coal per day, and is equipped with processes such as S-COS sulfur-resistant shift reaction, S-AGR acidic gas removal, and pretreatment of gasification wastewater containing high levels of hardness and ammonia nitrogen. Compared to traditional gasification technologies, the SE water-coal (coke) slurry gasification technology reduces coal consumption by 5%, oxygen consumption by 8%, extends the lifespan of slag outlet bricks by 60%, and doubles the lifespan of burners. The facility was successfully commissioned on November 18, 2021, with qualified hydrogen produced the following day; it took only 11 hours to complete the entire process, setting a record for the fastest commissioning time among similar facilities. Since its commissioning, the unit has achieved the goal of operating for a long period of time – four years between maintenance sessions – and has remained in safe and stable operation for 1,410 days in a row, setting a record for the long-term operation of coal-based hydrogen production units. Its operational reliability and duration are among the best in the industry, with all technical parameters reaching international advanced levels. The unit is equipped with the largest domestically produced four-channel burner of its kind in China at present; the burners in a single series of gasification furnaces can operate continuously for over 180 days, setting a new record for the continuous operation time of a single burner in SE water-coal (coke) slurry gasification processes. In terms of environmental protection and comprehensive resource utilization, this device can not only efficiently process high-sulfur petroleum coke, but also handle various organic wastes, waste liquids, and residues generated during the refining process, such as black sulfur, ethylene coke powder, and oily scum. It converts these into raw materials for pulp production, thereby enabling the efficient and environmentally sound utilization of refinery by-products and wastes. Since its operation began in 2021, the facility has recycled a total of 83,000 tons of various types of waste, achieving significant cost savings and emission reductions.
