Air is understandable; why then shouldn’t inert gases enter the flare system?
It is necessary to control the quality of the gases discharged into the flare system.
It should not matter to vent directly, especially for inert gases, but direct venting is rare; the gases need to be collected in a gas holder. In Dalian, inert gases are fed into gas tanks and then pressurized for use in heating furnaces. A high content of inert components may cause the heating furnace to shut down, or at the very least reduce its calorific value.
I think it has something to do with whether there is a process for recycling the gases in the torch system~~~ During startup and shutdown, inert gases and steam enter the torch system several times, but during operation, very little of such gases enters~~~ The load on the torch system is usually sufficient to handle the emergency pressure releases from several units; let alone a small amount of steam and inert gases. Therefore, I guess it must be related to the subsequent gas recycling process.
Inert gases are introduced into the system, mainly because there is a concern that the calorific value of flammable gases mixed with inert gases may be insufficient to ensure stable combustion; generally, a calorific value of at least 2000 kcal is required. Reference can be made to SH3009-2013. When it comes to pure inert gases, they can be discharged through a flare, which functions as a vent pipe – they simply do not burn. There are also systems designed for venting CO2 in this manner.
