The diesel hydrogenation unit has been in operation for 9 years. The chloride content of the raw materials purchased recently varies considerably; it wasn’t an issue before, but now it’s around 20 ppm. It mainly depends on whether the material of your equipment is sufficient; if not, the heat exchanger is prone to leakage
First, the plant owner needs to analyze and evaluate the form of chlorine present in the crude oil. If it is inorganic chlorine, then at such concentrations it will not have an impact on the equipment at normal temperatures; however, only at higher temperatures does the corrosive effect of chloride ions become apparent. If it is an organic chloride, then no adverse effects may occur before the hydrogenation reactor (depending on the thermal stability of the organic chloride component), but after hydrogenation, corresponding inorganic chlorides are formed, which will have an impact – and this impact affects more than just the heat exchangers.
Chloride ions corrode the surfacing layers of heat exchangers and reactors, having a significant impact in high-temperature heat exchangers and reactors. If possible, allow marketing to be included in some low-chlorine blends. The requirement for raw materials here is that it must be below 50ppb.
I’ve learned that the raw materials taken into consideration during the design of our equipment originally contained almost no chloride ions. Recently, the chloride content in the raw materials purchased has increased; we will pay closer attention to whether there are any leaks in the heat exchange equipment. Thank you.

If the chloride ion content exceeds 20 ppm, it may cause corrosion to equipment, pipelines, and catalysts. To prevent corrosion, it is recommended that you take some measures as soon as possible, such as adding additives like alkaline agents or desiccants to suppress the volatility of chloride ions. Additionally, you can also install advanced raw water treatment equipment, such as filters and activated carbon, to reduce chloride ions to the lowest levels possible
