According to British media reports on December 1, BP announced it was withdrawing its application to build the H2Teesside low-carbon hydrogen project in the UK. The project received support from the UK government’s Phase 1 Carbon Capture and Storage scheme, but it now needs to wait for official development permits before it can move forward. Once completed, the facility will become the largest low-carbon hydrogen production plant in the UK, playing a key role in helping the country achieve its goal of producing 10 gigawatts of hydrogen by 2030. BP said in an email statement: \"Due to significant changes in the circumstances at the project site, including local approval for plans to build a data center on the same plot of land, we have decided to cease further development of the H2Teesside project and have withdrawn the related development permit applications.\" ” In a letter to the planning regulatory authority, BP stated that although hydrogen could play an important role in the future energy market, the demand situation in the area where the project is located has deteriorated, with some large industrial users reducing or delaying their decarbonization plans. BP believes that these factors significantly increase the uncertainty surrounding the development of this project. This is not the first time BP has halted hydrogen projects. For example, in March 2025, BP canceled its first green hydrogen project in the UK, HyGreenTeesside. In mid-June 2025, BP “suspended indefinitely” its blue hydrogen plant and associated carbon capture project in Indiana, USA. In July 2025, BP announced its withdrawal from the Australian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) project, one of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects with a planned annual production capacity of up to 1.6 million tons of green hydrogen.
