The currently popular processes for sulfur treatment units are 1. the Claus process + exhaust gas hydrogenation + post-alkaline washing process for desulfurization. 2. Claus + ammonia desulfurization. 3. Klaus + exhaust hydrogenation + complexed iron desulfurization. 4. Klaus + ionic liquid desulfurization. The pre-alkaline washing process has been largely phased out nowadays.

Yes, the post-alkaline washing process is widely used in current manufacturing techniques. The handling of the alkaline sludge generated by this process (which results in a large volume of wastewater) requires cooperation with wastewater treatment plants. Ammonia-based desulfurization is mainly plagued by ammonia escape and sulfate AN clogging issues (the sulfate AN aspect is basically handled by an external party). In the field of ionic liquids, the initial investment costs are high, the material requirements are stringent, and corrosion is a significant issue. In the case of complexed iron, it is mainly used in exhaust gas hydrogenation, after amine-based desulfurization, for desulfurization using complexed iron. (The current problem is that the sulfur particles present in the system tend to cause blockages, so it is necessary to increase the filtration capacity. )

It is also possible to directly produce sulfuric acid from acidic gases; the by-product medium-pressure steam can be sold externally, while 98% sulfuric acid is produced as well. This technology is also quite mature now.
It’s not that it’s all based on the Klaus process; after all, this technology is quite mature, offers good cost-performance, and meets environmental standards. The hydrogen sulfide concentration of the raw materials selected for sulfur recovery accounts for a large proportion.
