Polyoxymethylene is an important general-purpose thermoplastic engineering plastic. Polyoxymethylene features a low relative density, good impact strength and dynamic fatigue strength, as well as excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, self-lubricating properties, and electrical characteristics; it also has low permeability to air and water vapor. Products such as gears, buttons, water meters, valves, pump impellers, sprinkler components, and zippers made of polyoxymethylene are widely used in industries such as automobiles, electronics and electrical equipment, industrial machinery, agriculture, and consumer goods. As an important engineering plastic, its production capacity ranks third, only behind polyamides and polycarbonates. Polyoxymethylene production abroad is mainly concentrated in industrially developed regions such as the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. By 2002, the world’s total annual production capacity for polyoxymethylene was 827,000 tons, of which the United States, Western Europe, and Japan together accounted for 572,000 tons, representing about 69% of the global total production capacity. In recent years, the production capacity of polyoxymethylene in Asia has grown rapidly, with South Korea and Taiwan, China successively building production facilities with capacities of 10,000 tons each. The research and development of polyoxymethylene in our country began at the end of the 1950s, and product production has remained at a low level. Before 2000, there were only 2 thousand-ton-scale polyoxymethylene production facilities in the country. Despite years of efforts, issues such as small production scale, low level of production technology, high consumption of raw materials and energy, high production costs, and unstable product quality persisted, which hindered the development and widespread use of domestically produced polyoxymethylene. However, with the development of the national economy, demand for polyoxymethylene in China has grown rapidly, prompting manufacturers both at home and abroad to increase their efforts in developing and producing polyoxymethylene. In 2001, Yunnan introduced the first polyoxymethylene production facility in China with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons, sourced from the Polish company ZAT; a facility with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons is currently under construction and is expected to come online around 2005. In addition, several domestic companies plan to build polyoxymethylene production facilities, and several well-known international manufacturers of polyoxymethylene also have plans to set up plants in China. It is estimated that by around 2005, China’s annual production capacity for polyoxymethylene could reach 120,000 tons. During the 1970s and 1980s, domestic consumption of polyoxymethylene remained at the level of several thousand tons for a long time. Since the 1990s, especially toward its end, remarkable changes have taken place in the consumption of polyoxymethylene due to the rapid development of the electronics and electrical industry, the automotive industry, and the export processing sector. Statistics show that since 1992, with the rapid economic development of our country, the demand for polyoxymethylene has increased sharply. In 2001, China’s apparent demand for polyoxymethylene reached 105,400 tons, and in 2002 it reached 135,600 tons. Due to the low production volume in our country, domestic market demand relies mainly on imports, and these imports have been increasing year by year; in 2002, the net import volume reached 127,600 tons. The consumption pattern of polyoxymethylene in our country differs significantly from that in other countries; it is primarily used in the electronics and electrical equipment sector as well as in consumer goods. Of this total, 55% of the demand comes from the electronics and electrical equipment sector, 20% from consumer goods, 15% from the automotive industry, 8% from industrial machinery, and 2% from other sectors. The electronics and electrical industry is the main sector in China that consumes polyoxymethylene, and it has seen rapid development in recent years, driving a strong increase in demand for this material. It will continue to be a sector with fast-growing demand for polyoxymethylene in China in the future. The automobile industry is a pillar industry in our country, and it will be the sector with the fastest growth in demand for polyoxymethylene in the years to come. It is estimated that China’s demand for polyoxymethylene will reach 180,000 tons by 2005, and 250,000 tons by 2010. Based on the above analysis of China’s polyoxymethylene production and market, the situation in which demand for polyoxymethylene exceeds supply in China will remain unchanged for a long time to come, indicating promising prospects for investing in polyoxymethylene projects.
