PPCP carbon dioxide-based bioplastics are theoretically easy to decompose and pose little harm to the environment. However, their practical application market is not yet mature. Is there anyone who knows about this?
Indeed, the concept of PPCP sounds quite ideal, but there are still many hurdles to overcome in practice. Let me briefly mention a few points I’ve observed: Technological maturity: The degradation performance of PPCP is actually quite “fragile”—it can be easily broken down only under specific industrial composting conditions. When disposed of in natural soil or the ocean, its degradation rate isn’t necessarily much faster than that of ordinary plastics. This is mentioned in many research articles these days, and it needs to be taken into account in practical applications. Market and costs: Currently, the production cost of PPCP is significantly higher than that of traditional petroleum-based plastics, and its production capacity is limited; its use in downstream applications such as packaging and agricultural films is still in the experimental stage. However, if carbon tax policies are tightened and environmental regulations become stricter in the future, it may force the market to accept them; this depends on how policies evolve. Risk warning: The long-term environmental impacts of such new materials (such as the risk of microplastics) have not yet been fully understood. It is recommended to pay attention to lifecycle assessment reports from authoritative organizations, rather than relying solely on promotional materials.
