Why is there a cubic tank connected to the inlet of some centrifugal pumps? I’m not sure what its purpose is

This post was last edited by HSLJHZ on 2017-3-11 at 13:09. The day before yesterday I noticed that the company had ordered a regular centrifugal pump, but its inlet was connected to a small cube-shaped tank; I’m not sure what purpose that serves
It’s the liquid storage tank or the gas-liquid separator of the self-priming pump, I guess

The liquid storage tank of a self-priming pump – some of them are used for unloading liquid – operates on a similar principle; its purpose is to eliminate the need for manual filling of the pump or to ensure that all the liquid in the pipes is emptied during unloading
No image; it might be used for exhaust or pumping.
Is the inlet pipe of the pump you are using submerged deep in the pool? If so, it is used for filling the pump
It could be a filter; it’s relatively easy to remove.
