I believe that explosion-proof motors installed outdoors don’t require rain covers, since no flammable gases can get inside them; how could water possibly get in? However, at the chemical plant where I currently work, all outdoor motors are equipped with rain covers. Therefore, I’m not sure whether rain covers are indeed necessary for outdoor flameproof motors. What’s your opinion on this matter?
It depends on the IP rating of your motor. If it’s IP55, which means it’s dust and water resistant, then it shouldn’t be necessary. Of course, having additional protection will yield better results and allow the motor to last longer.
For the vertical models on our end, rain covers are required for installation, while this is not necessary for the horizontal models.

Explosion protection has nothing to do with rain; it depends on the protection level. If possible, it is advisable to add a rain cover on site as a precaution; alternatively, you can ask the supplier to include one with the delivery.

Explosion protection and protection ratings are not the same thing; just because a junction box is explosion-proof does not mean that the shaft seal provides good protection. Over time, it is possible for rainwater to enter the bearings through the shaft seal. It is better to use a protective cover; otherwise, it depends on the motor’s own protection capabilities
I’ve seen motors with an IP55 rating that were left outdoors for over half a year; as a result, they got damp and stopped working, and people then tried to claim that there was a quality issue. It’s like a person who doesn’t use an umbrella or raincoat; after getting wet a few times, what can happen? But what if you ask him to try going around without a raincoat or an umbrella?
