We have installed three centrifugal pumps using water as the medium; the temperature of the water ranges from 100 to 120 degrees. The standby pump’s preheating function is kept on all the time as a backup. I wonder if it’s necessary to keep it running continuously – is preheating still required in summer?!
There’s no need to turn it on in summer; it’s mainly used to prevent the backup pump from freezing in winter

For critical pumps, hot oil pumps should always be preheated, as it’s impossible to know when a running pump will fail; once such a failure occurs, the backup pump must be activated immediately. Therefore, critical hot oil pumps should always be kept preheated.
A oil pump is considered to be operating in hot conditions only when the temperature is above 200 degrees Celsius. So, is it still acceptable for water to be at a temperature of 100 to 120 degrees? If the pump is designed to function at temperatures around 100 degrees, then preheating isn’t necessary
To determine whether this water pump operates normally at temperatures of 100–120 degrees, it is necessary to consider the pressure at the pump’s inlet; as long as the pressure is above the saturated vapor pressure at those temperatures, there should be no issues, and the design certainly takes this into account. This pump is turned on for preheating only during winter to prevent freezing; this preheating serves a different purpose from that of the hot oil pump. This water pump is used for winter anti-freezing purposes, while the hot oil pump is used to keep the equipment warm (since it operates at high temperatures, starting it suddenly from room temperature would create a large temperature difference that could damage the equipment and lead to problems).
The hot oil pump must be preheated; otherwise, it poses a safety hazard
