API 682 requires that the coolant from the mechanical seal type PLAN 52 be discharged into a flare system. However, the design team is reluctant to connect it to the flare system, as they are concerned that heavy hydrocarbon substances might condense into a liquid phase in the flare pipeline after being discharged (our plant does not have a thermal flare). For those that cannot be directly integrated into the flare network, it is possible to consider integrating them into containers containing media with similar properties, or to replace them with a 53 sealing system
For the pressure-free flushing system model 52, what is the medium used? It is a conventional medium with low risk and easy to control; therefore, it may be possible to omit the flare line. The top vent valve should remain closed. An increase in liquid level or an increase in pressure in the white oil tank indicates a leak in the main seal. For hazardous media, it can be considered to change the flare line to nitrogen and to replace scheme 52 with scheme 53A. However, the static seal ring inside the mechanical seal needs to be equipped with a snap ring; otherwise, the static seal ring will be damaged when the pressure in the tank rises.
