Most liquid sulfur pump seals use packing seals, but these types of seals have a high failure rate and are prone to leakage. Why aren’t mechanical seals used instead? I would appreciate it if experts could help explain this. Thank you.
If you use a mechanical seal for a liquid sulfur pump, you’ll have to opt for a dry gas seal instead. The cost of such a sealing system is enough to cover the price of another pump – would you go ahead and buy it? Can’t state-owned enterprises afford to spend this money? You have to consider the costs. If they quote a price for gasket seals while you quote a price for dry gas seals, at 100 units costing 99.9 per unit, how can this salesperson continue working?

Due to the high temperature of liquid sulfur, whose melting point is also above 120 degrees, the material used for seal rings makes it difficult to choose an appropriate sealing and flushing scheme for mechanical seals. As a result, the cost of such seals is high, and their performance is average; they are not as cost-effective as those using packing. It is recommended that, if necessary, switch to a liquid sulfur submersible pump without seals.
It’s estimated that as long as something goes wrong, it will be repaired. Leak-free is required, zero leakage. I guess it still needs to be repaired as long as there’s a smell coming from it. Environmental protection requirements.
