Screw compressors are also known as screw-type compressors. In the 1950s, oil-injected screw compressors began to be used in refrigeration systems. Thanks to their simple structure and few wear-prone parts, they can operate under conditions involving large pressure differences or pressure ratios while maintaining low discharge temperatures. They are also insensitive to refrigerants containing a significant amount of lubricating oil (commonly referred to as “wet compression”), and exhibit excellent capacity modulation capabilities. As a result, they quickly replaced reciprocating compressors in applications requiring high capacities, and gradually expanded into the medium-capacity range as well. Today, they are widely used in various refrigeration systems such as freezers, refrigerated storage units, air conditioning systems, and chemical processing equipment. Screw-type heat pumps utilizing it as the main unit have been used for heating and air conditioning since the early 1970s. They come in various types, such as air-source heat pumps, water-source heat pumps, heat recovery units, and ice thermal storage systems. In the industrial sector, screw heat pumps are also used for heat recovery in order to save energy.
