The LPG skid-mounted station is designed with a capacity of 30,000 m3 per day; the feed gas compressors are reciprocating compressors, one in use and one as a backup. To meet the production targets, the management has decided to operate two raw gas compressors simultaneously at a low frequency. What are the risks associated with such equipment and process arrangements?
1. According to the operator’s plan, this operating mode represents a low-load condition for reciprocating compressors; for example, each compressor operates at 50% load. Operation at low load may involve changes in the reverse angle; it is advisable to have the manufacturer evaluate whether the resulting operating conditions fall within the limits permitted by the specifications, in other words, whether long-term operation at low load is allowed. 2. Can the compressor in the original post operate at a low frequency? Is it an inverter-driven motor? 3. Another issue that requires attention is the vibration of the piping system; when both units are in use, the frequency of air flow pulses changes, and this may trigger resonance in the piping system. 4. It is likely that this consideration has already been taken into account, but it is the user’s responsibility to ensure the availability of utilities such as water, electricity, and air supply.
With no cost concerns regarding energy consumption, and in order to ensure safe and stable continuous gas supply, it’s best to use three units or more to guarantee reliability. If there can be downtime during production and production costs are a concern, it is necessary to do some calculations. However, as someone who is not involved in decision-making, it’s best to observe the situation and approach it with a learning attitude.
