I’m asking about those centrifugal pumps used for pumping liquids – can they create a vacuum when there is no fluid present? Logically, it should be possible (although the efficiency wouldn’t be high)
Due to its working principle, a centrifugal pump can create a vacuum when running idle: the high-speed rotation of the rotor (impeller) generates centrifugal force, which forces the fluid out of the pump and creates a vacuum that draws in more fluid. Therefore, in theory, it is possible for such a pump to create a vacuum. However, in practical operation, due to factors such as the sealing performance and corrosion resistance of centrifugal pumps, it is not recommended to let them run idly to create a vacuum, as this may damage the tank or the pump itself. Centrifugal pumps cannot achieve a complete vacuum state. Because the working principle of centrifugal pumps prevents them from operating continuously in the absence of fluid. If it runs idle for a long time, it can cause damage to the mechanical seal and even lead to overheating or burning of the pump. Whether the can can be flattened depends on its material and its compressive strength. If the tank material is thin and has poor compressive strength, it may deform due to pressure differences under vacuum conditions. However, in general, tank design takes this factor into account, so the situation of flattening occurs less often. In practical operations, long periods of idling while pumping vacuum should also be avoided to prevent safety hazards. .
