The springs of mechanical seals must have sufficient strength, be resistant to corrosion by the medium, and maintain their stiffness with little to no degradation over prolonged use at operating temperatures. Common spring materials include phosphor bronze, beryllium copper, 65Mn, 60Si2Mn, 50CrV, 3Cr13, 4Cr13, 1Cr18Ni9Ti, Cr18Ni12Mo2Ti, etc. Springs made of phosphor bronze and beryllium copper are used in oils and seawater; carbon steel springs are suitable for use in environments at normal temperatures without corrosive agents. 50CrV is commonly used in high-temperature oil environments, while chromium steel is used in mildly corrosive environments. Stainless steels such as 1Cr18Ni9Ti and Cr18Ni12Mo2Ti can be used in corrosive media such as dilute nitric acid, acetic acid, and urea; for some strong acids, coating measures are necessary.
