The Ruwais Refinery (Abu Dhabi Oil Refinery Co. (Takreer)) is located in Ruwais, United Arab Emirates. It has a refining capacity of 817,000 barrels per day (approximately 40.85 million tons per year), and it is owned by Abu Dhabi Refining Company. The plant was built in 1981 by Abu Dhabi’s **Oil Company (ADNOC)**, with an initial production capacity of 120,000 barrels per day; it was expanded to 280,000 barrels per day in 2000 through design and construction by Snamprogetti. Subsequently, Abu Dhabi Refining Company (Takreer) acquired its ownership and expanded the capacity from 400,000 barrels per day to 817,000 barrels per day (approximately 40.85 million tons per year) between 2010 and 2015. The expansion was carried out by SK Engineering & Construction, GS Engineering & Construction, Samsung Engineering, and Daewoo Engineering and Construction, at an investment of $9.6 billion; this included the construction of a new atmospheric distillation unit with a capacity of 417,000 barrels per day, as well as sulfur recovery units, residue catalytic cracking units, and delayed coking units. The refinery is capable of producing 1.1 million tons per year of propylene, as well as liquefied gas, high-quality lead-free gasoline, regular lead-free gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, marine fuel, diesel, and sulfur. Its shipping terminal can accommodate ships of 330,000 tons.
