This is the first time that an existing major natural gas pipeline has been modified to serve as a hydrogen transmission pipeline. Industrial hydrogen is transported via pipelines. Gas exchange is no longer necessary. The effective and safe transportation of hydrogen is ensured through underground transport via gas networks. This 12-kilometer long hydrogen pipeline is now in operation; an agreement regarding it was signed in March 2018 among Dow, Yara, ICL-IP, and Gasunie Hydrogen Services. In the summer of 2017, the connection between Dow and Yara was completed, and the natural gas pipeline was modified in several places to make it suitable for transporting hydrogen. This pipeline is now used for commercial transport, carrying over four thousand tons of hydrogen per year. Hydrogen will also be transported by pipeline to ICL-IP at a later stage. This partnership is part of the industry collaborations for sustainable development within the Smart Delta Resources platform, which is driven by Impuls from Zeeland Development Company, the port company North Sea Port, as well as the provinces of Zeeland and East Flanders. In 2016, the partners signed a green trade agreement for the \"hydrogen corridor,\" and the commissioning of this pipeline was the first outcome of that agreement.
