On August 30, 2023, China achieved a breakthrough in the large-scale industrial application of green hydrogen; the country’s first 10,000-ton-scale photovoltaic green hydrogen demonstration project was fully completed and put into operation in Xinjiang. This project is the first in China to utilize photovoltaic power generation on a large scale to produce green hydrogen directly. It takes advantage of the abundant solar energy resources in Xinjiang to generate electricity for the production of green hydrogen; its hydrogen production capacity is 20,000 tons per year, its hydrogen storage capacity is 210,000 cubic meters, and its hydrogen transport capacity is 28,000 cubic meters per hour. Green hydrogen refining is regarded as an important pathway for the chemical industry to achieve a green transformation. Taking this green hydrogen demonstration project as an example, the green hydrogen produced by it will replace natural gas-based hydrogen production at Tahe Refining & Chemical Company, and be used as a raw material in hydrogenation reactions; ultimately, it will be incorporated into oil products to achieve greener refining outputs. The project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 485,000 tons per year. It represents the first large-scale application of green hydrogen in the refining industry, and serves as a significant model for refining companies to utilize green hydrogen on a large scale in order to reduce carbon emissions.
