On August 31, the 260,000-ton/year polycarbonate (PC) production project of Sino-Saudi (Tianjin) Petrochemical Co., Ltd. began commercial operation in the Tianjin Nangang Industrial Zone. This project is another successful outcome of the partnership between Sinopec and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), following the million-ton ethylene project. It opens a new chapter in the close cooperation between the two parties in China, will further meet the growing domestic demand for PC, and contribute to the rapid development of the high-end new materials industry. Ma Yongsheng, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Chairman of Sinopec Group, Liu Guiping, Member of the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and Executive Vice Mayor, and Khalid Al-Dabbagh, Chairman of SABIC, attended the commercial operation ceremony and delivered speeches; Yu Baocai, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy General Manager of the group company as well as President of the joint-stock company, presided over the event. During his stay in Tianjin, Ma Yongsheng, together with Zhang Gong, Deputy Secretary of the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and Mayor, inspected the PC project and the Tianjin Nangang Ethylene Project. He listened to reports on the progress of the Nangang Ethylene Project construction, met with the officials and workers involved in the project, and put forward requirements for advancing the project construction safely and efficiently. Yu Baocai participated in the research. Polycarbonate is an important engineering plastic that belongs to the category of high-end chemical materials. It features being colorless and transparent, impact-resistant, heat-resistant, strong, and lightweight. It is widely used in fields such as aerospace, electrical and electronic industries, medical equipment, automotive parts, building materials, and household items. The polycarbonate production facility that has now come online was constructed in 2018, utilizing the world’s advanced phosgene-free melt process. Two new PC production lines with a capacity of 130,000 tons per year each were built; these lines are capable of producing PC products of various grades such as mixed grade, extrusion grade, and injection molding grade. In the future, these products will be supplied primarily to key industries in China, including those in electrical and electronic equipment as well as construction materials. Ma Yongsheng said that Sinopec has always been committed to promoting the development of Sino-Saudi (Tianjin) Petrochemical as well as cooperation between the petrochemical industries of China and Saudi Arabia. The successful commercial operation of the Sino-Saudi (Tianjin) Petrochemical Polycarbonate project marks another significant step forward for Sinopec in the field of high-end chemical materials. It will supply more high-quality new materials to the domestic market, meeting the growing needs of the population as well as the requirements of emerging industries. Next, Sinopec will make full use of its strengths to accelerate the development of downstream polycarbonate alloy materials, thereby making new contributions to meeting the demand for high-performance petrochemical materials in the pursuit of a better life for the people. At present, Tianjin is taking practical actions for high-quality development to bring the Party’s guiding principles into effect. Taking the commercial operation of the Sino-Saudi (Tianjin) Petrochemical Polycarbonate Project as a new starting point, Tianjin will resolutely implement the new development concepts, continuously improve the business environment, and vigorously promote deeper and more advanced reform and opening up. It will work together with investors and partners to share development opportunities, create new chapters in cooperation, and build a brighter future together. Khalid Al-Dabagh said that the Sino-Saudi (Tianjin) Petrochemical Polycarbonate project is SABIC’s first PC production facility built in Asia. Once completed and put into operation, this project will strengthen the company’s existing PC business presence in China, enhance the flexibility of product supply while maintaining supply chain stability, and significantly improve the company’s ability to serve its customers. SABIC will continue to deepen its strategic partnership with Sinopec, making full use of the advantages of the Sino-Saudi polycarbonate plant. Sino-Sabic (Tianjin) Petrochemical was established on October 20, 2009. It is a large-scale petrochemical enterprise jointly founded by Sinopec and SABIC in a 50:50 shareholding ratio, located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin. It began commercial operations on May 11, 2010. During the mutual visits in 2016 and 2017 between *** President and King Salman of Saudi Arabia, Sinopec and SABIC signed a series of cooperation memorandums in the presence of the leaders of both countries, with the joint venture for polycarbonate production being one of the key projects among them.
