This system reduced the nitrogen oxide levels in the flue gas emitted by the cracking furnace by over 40%, making the company the first in China to implement such a system in ethylene cracking furnaces. After its operation began, the nitrogen oxide emission concentration was kept below 70 milligrams per cubic meter, which is well below the standard of 100 milligrams per cubic meter that was required to be achieved by July this year. Nitrogen oxide emissions are a key focus in the control of air pollution. On July 1, **new standards for flue gas emissions will come into effect; in sensitive areas, the nitrogen oxide emission levels from heating furnaces are required to be less than 100 milligrams per cubic meter. Almost all ethylene cracker units across the country need to be upgraded in order to meet the new requirements. The commonly used method in the industry at present is to modify the burners of ethylene cracking furnaces, but this approach is not yet mature. The ethylene cracking dual-furnace gas cracker at Zhenhai Refining & Chemical is new equipment. From the outset of its construction, Zhenhai Refining & Chemical collaborated with institutions such as Fuyan Research Institute to explore the application of catalytic denitration technology in oil refining processes; the environmental protection pilot project for improved pollution control was built simultaneously with the gas cracker. In June 2016, the gas pyrolysis furnace was put into operation, and the environmental protection pilot project for improved pollution control was also completed. At the beginning of 2017, the catalyst installation for the flue gas denitration system was finished. The flue gas denitration technology for ethylene cracking furnaces was jointly developed by Sinopec Engineering Construction Company (SEI) and Fushun Research Institute of Petroleum Chemistry. By injecting ammonia into the flue gas in the convection section, and through catalytic reduction by the catalyst bed, the nitrogen oxides in the flue gas from the pyrolysis furnace are converted into nitrogen and water, thereby reducing the level of nitrogen oxides in the flue gas.
By the end of August 2021, more than half a year had passed since the new type of flue gas denitration catalyst was installed in Zhenhai Refining & Chemical’s first cracking furnace equipped with flue gas denitration technology. Data showed that the emissions of nitrogen oxides and ammonia in the flue gas from this cracking furnace had decreased significantly, resulting in an further improvement in environmental performance. The flue gas denitration technology used in the denitration system of this cracking furnace is a domestic innovation; it was first applied at Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. in 2017. This technology makes use of the reducing effect of catalysts to effectively reduce the level of nitrogen oxides in flue gas. Compared with conventional cracking furnaces that use low-nitrogen burners to remove nitrogen oxides, this cracking furnace achieves a significantly higher removal efficiency. Over the past 3 years since its operation, its environmental performance indicators have been superior to those of conventional cracking furnaces. At the beginning of the year, the ethylene team at Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company once again explored the possibilities of optimizing the furnace’s environmental performance metrics, and taking advantage of the furnace’s maintenance period, they opted to replace it with new catalysts that feature high purity, long lifespan, small size, and low cost. Since its commissioning half a year ago, it has performed well; the emissions of harmful substances in the flue gas have been further reduced. Compared to before, nitrogen oxides and escaped ammonia have decreased by approximately 50% and 40% respectively, with these values far exceeding the domestic control standards.
