The new syngas plant is an important part of Daqing Petrochemical’s 200,000 tons per year butyl octanol expansion project. Using heavy oil or pyrolysis tar as raw materials and employing the quenching process technology from GE Corporation in the United States, it produces high-quality feed gas for carbonylation processes. It is the first facility in China to produce syngas through oil-to-gas conversion. Its designed production capacity is 22,818 standard cubic meters per hour, with an annual designed operating time of 8,000 hours; it boasts advantages such as a simple process, low investment costs, and small land requirements. Once the unit is put into operation, it will supply syngas feedstock for the 200,000 tons per year butyl octanol plant. It is understood that the price of tar is lower than that of heavy oil, and heavy oil can be used as a raw material for refining and further processing. After the 1.2 million tons per year ethylene plant at Daqing Petrochemical comes online, a large amount of pyrolysis tar will be generated. Once the new syngas plant is put into operation, it will not only help reduce the operating costs of the plants but also address the issue of material balance resulting from the expansion of the ethylene production capacity, thereby achieving a win-win situation with optimized energy utilization and maximum corporate profitability.
