On April 24, visiting the first-phase project of Wuhai Qichuangxin Materials Technology Co., Ltd., located in the Wuda High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, which has an annual production capacity of 3,000 tons of fine chemical products such as phenylhydrazine, one is greeted by a bustling construction scene: the main structures such as the production buildings, office spaces, and power distribution rooms have been largely completed, with workers busy installing equipment and laying process pipelines. It is reported that the first phase of the project is expected to begin production in July. The investment of 160 million yuan will facilitate innovation across various fields related to pharmaceutical dyes and environmental protection, enabling coking waste sulfur to be transformed into soil conditioners and pharmaceutical intermediates, thus achieving a win-win situation in terms of ecological benefits and industrial upgrading. It is understood that sodium pyrosulfite produced in the first phase of this project is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, and industrial sectors, primarily as an antioxidant, preservative, and disinfectant. In pharmaceuticals, it helps to stabilize drug components and extend their shelf life by inhibiting oxidation reactions or microbial growth ; Sodium bisulfite is mainly used as a bleaching agent, preservative, antioxidant, and bacteriostatic agent ; Ammonium bisulfite is mainly used as a preservative and reducing agent, and can also be used in the production of sulfur dioxide, safety powder, etc ; Sodium sulfite is mainly used as a stabilizer for synthetic fibers, a fabric bleaching agent, a photographic developer, a deoxygenating agent for dyeing and bleaching, a reducing agent for fragrances and dyes, and a lignin removal agent in papermaking. The products have a wide range of applications, being used in industries such as mineral processing, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas extraction, food processing, and dyes, offering broad market prospects. “The raw materials are available locally in Wuhai, which gives us significant advantages in terms of price and transportation. Moreover, these products are relatively scarce in the northern regions; we have already received a large number of orders. ”Zhang Yongfei, the project leader, said that this project is a facility for the resource-based treatment of hazardous waste. By utilizing advanced process technologies, it is possible to convert the sulfur-containing hazardous waste generated by nearby coking enterprises through chemical reactions such as catalytic conversion into sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide. Further processing in reactors along with the use of alkalis then enables the production of high-value fine chemical products. This project not only enables the harmless treatment of hazardous waste, but also generates significant economic benefits through its resource utilization. Zhang Yongfei said that the second-phase project will have an annual production capacity of 2,000 tons of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride and 3,000 tons of phenylhydrazine, among four other products. The phenylhydrazine and phenylhydrazine hydrochloride produced in the second phase are important intermediates in organic synthesis; they undergo cycloaddition reactions with carbonyl compounds and enol compounds to produce various intermediates and compounds used in pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, etc. The ammonium salts produced as by-products are mainly used in crop cultivation to improve soil fertility, and there is a very high demand for them in the market. Once all projects are completed and put into operation, the hazardous waste conversion technology will generate an annual output value of 320 million yuan, yield profits and taxes amounting to 38.9 million yuan, and create 80 job opportunities.
