The 800,000-ton/year coal-to-olefins project in Zhundong, Xinjiang has fully entered the construction phase. Recently, the 800,000-ton/year coal-to-olefins project owned by Shandong Energy Group in the Wucaiwan Coal, Electricity, and Coal Chemicals Base in Zhundong, Xinjiang, reached a key stage in its construction. The shortlisted candidates for the EPC general contracting of key sections such as the polypropylene plant and the plant’s tank farms have been successively announced, indicating that this modern coal chemical project, with a total investment of over 10 billion yuan, has moved fully from the preliminary design phase into the construction phase. The 800,000 tons per year coal-to-olefins project in Wucaiwan, Zhundong is an integrated project for the graded and differentiated utilization of coal, developed by Shandong Energy Group based on the No. 4 open-pit coal mine in the Wucaiwan mining area. The total investment in this project is substantial, and the construction scope includes 13 production units. The main production facilities include: air separation (2 units with a capacity of 110,000 m³/h), gasification (4 multi-nozzle pulverized coal semi-boiler gasifiers with a capacity of 3,000 tons per day), shift and heat recovery, low-temperature methanol washing, sulfur recovery, methanol synthesis (2.2 million tons per year), methanol to olefins (UOP MTO+OCP technology), olefin separation, steam cracking, and the production of 1-butene from C4. The supporting projects include: utility projects, storage and transportation projects (including the tank farm subject to this bidding), environmental protection projects, etc. The main products of this project are high-performance chemical materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene; simultaneously, by-products including sulfur, MTBE, C5 and C6 compounds, liquefied gas, and wax components are produced. The aim is to achieve clean and efficient utilization of coal, thereby promoting a green and low-carbon transformation in modern coal chemical industry. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2028. This highly capital-intensive project will create significant job opportunities. During the construction peak period, it is estimated that tens of thousands of job opportunities will be available in various fields such as civil engineering, equipment installation, pipeline welding, electrical and instrumentation maintenance, and project management, as well as for general construction workers ; Once the project is operational, it will provide a steady supply of around 1,500 high-quality long-term employment opportunities in the Zhundong region of Xinjiang.
