There are many materials available for such seals in the market, such as graphite and polytetrafluoroethylene. Mine still has more tetrafluoroethylene in it; it’s black and somewhat similar to graphite, but it’s not as fragile as graphite – it doesn’t break just from a drop… The sealing performance is still good. (P.S. Don’t ask me why I fell; it was an accident, you know.)
I have a lot of oil-impregnated asbestos here, as well as hard grinding shafts made of stone, which are also brittle and tend to crack after just a few days of use. Perfluoroethylene is used in small amounts, so I don’t have a strong impression of it.
Those with temperatures that are not too high prefer to use polytetrafluoroethylene! Use graphite for temperatures that polytetrafluoroethylene cannot withstand! Asbestos packing is cheap, but it’s not durable!

Only water pumps use packing; for other fluids, mechanical seals are used to ensure safety, environmental protection, or cost savings. Packing materials have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the key factor is whether they offer good cost-performance. Most importantly: when I manage the equipment, I allow it, and require that there be a drip of water – 5 or 6 drops per minute – which effectively ensures proper cooling of the packing/pump shaft and allows for long-term operation
What type of packing material do you use?
Both graphite and tetrafluoroethylene are used. Graphite is used for the boiler feed water pump, while tetrafluoroethylene is used for the circulating water.
