Hello, teacher. I would like to ask you about the use of metal materials for cooling 98% sulfuric acid from 100°C to 55°C. Currently, I have SMO254, C276, as well as 304L and 316L stainless steels to choose from.
The materials are all good; I just know that carbon steel is sufficient for concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature
I want to know if SMO254 can be used; it would be even better if 304 and 316 are suitable
254SMO is a highly corrosion-resistant super austenitic stainless steel developed for use in environments with halides and acids; it is widely employed in harsh conditions such as media with high concentrations of chloride ions and seawater. In various industrial applications in acidic media, especially in acids containing halides, 254SMO is far superior to other stainless steels; in some cases it can compare with Hastelloy and titanium. Its low carbon content and high molybdenum content confer on it good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion; it is a cost-effective stainless steel that is widely used in industries such as chemicals and desulfurization and environmental protection both domestically and internationally.
Can 98% concentrated sulfuric acid at 90-55 degrees be used with 254SMO?
OP, I’m not sure what your operating pressure and temperature are. For high-concentration sulfuric acid, from a cost perspective, have you considered using plastic equipment, such as HDPE?

Actually, if fluoropolymer-coated materials are available, any cheap type of stainless steel will do; even carbon steel is fine
