The flow rate of the gear pump is regulated using an outlet valve; what if a flow-limiting orifice plate is used at the outlet instead?
A flow-limiting orifice plate cannot increase the flow rate.
Adding a flow restriction orifice plate is very good
Lockhead circulation pumps generally do not require flow regulation. The flow-limiting orifice plate should serve a different purpose; it’s not meant for regulating flow, right?
The water quality in the gear pump isn’t very good; installing a orifice plate to regulate flow should extend its usage time, as the erosion is too severe!
Since there is no need to adjust the flow rate, I believe it is unnecessary to install a flow control orifice plate.
Our company also uses flow regulation valves for adjustment; it seems that we don’t have any flow restriction orifice plates
Lowering the pressure reduces the flow rate, thereby decreasing the erosion on the pipes.

This seems unnecessary; in our case, due to the low power of the motors, the outlet valves are generally not fully open but remain in a semi-open position. However, this can accelerate wear on the valves. Since ball valves are used at the pump outlets, I think it’s better to have a higher flow rate if the motor allows it. After all, the purpose of the lockhopper circulation pump is to speed up the water circulation between the lockhopper and the quenching chamber of the gasifier, thereby assisting in the removal of slag and preventing slag masses from accumulating and forming bridges above the slag crusher. Increasing the flow rate appropriately can also lower the temperature of the black water in the quenching chamber, thereby preventing water from entering the gasification furnace. Additionally, the lockhopper appears to be equipped with a sedimentation tank; the slag particles coming from the quenching chamber do not enter the lockhopper directly but first pass through this sedimentation tank before settling at the bottom of the lockhopper. The principle is similar to that of a clarifier tank. As a result, although the water quality is poor, it is not simply a mixture of slag and water, so the impact on the pipes should be limited:):).
This post was last edited by wlq1970 on 2015-6-23 09:57. In fact, the slag discharge process of the hopper pump is not a design method (that is, self-circulation of the hopper pump). In some cases, when discharging slag from the hopper, water is supplied to the inlet of the hopper pump as pressure water for the hopper, and this water is sent to the quenching chamber of the gasification furnace. Based on design principles, the outlet flow rate of the hopper pump plays a crucial role; it is not sufficient to consider only the control during normal operation – operations under special conditions must also be taken into account. Therefore, the use of flow-limiting orifice plates is not recommended.
