My workplace needs to use storage tanks for storing butyl acrylate recently. By looking at posts made by experts on forums, some suggest using 304 material while others say carbon steel will suffice. What are the main considerations regarding the material choice? Is it related to its polymerization properties? For a product with such aggregating properties, when it evaporates and condenses at the tank’s top safety valve or vent valve, if there is cargo stored in the tank for an extended period of time, how should this be handled in order to avoid safety hazards? I’m asking for help from all the experts~~ Please don’t stand by and do nothing!~~·
Also, could polymerization occur inside the pump when using a centrifugal pump?
Note that rust acts as an initiator for the polymerization of this material; therefore, stainless steel is the preferred choice; Attention should also be paid to reducing the roughness inside the equipment, in order to minimize burrs and similar issues during installation.
The iron ions in rust can act as a catalyst, so 304 material is required, and it is best for the storage tanks to be acid-washed and passivated. Also, monomers tend to self-polymerize at high temperatures, so it is necessary to regularly inspect and clean the breather valve, especially in summer.
Maintain an appropriate temperature and add a polymerization inhibitor regularly
The iron ions present in rust can induce polymerization. The storage tanks for butyl acrylate are made of stainless steel 304 or S30408; since the material is prone to polymerization, the storage temperature should not be too high, and a freezing cycle is required as well. Add a retarder, store for an extended period, and use a pump for forced circulation.
