I work in instrumentation design. I currently have a renovation project for which I am responsible for the construction drawings. When the drawings were ready, the reviewer raised an issue, stating that there were no safety barriers, and asked me to modify the drawings. I said that the owner chose flameproof instruments, not intrinsically safe ones, so it shouldn’t be necessary to use safety barriers. Later I asked the owner, and they said they didn’t use any safety barriers at all. When I mentioned this to the auditor, he said that even if they don’t use them, our drawings should still show the presence of safety barriers; whether to use them or not is up to them. What should we do? Should I add it or not? If I don’t add it, the reviewer will still come to me during the approval process; if I do add it, will the property owner come to me as well? Has anyone encountered a similar situation before? How did you handle it?
So many design institutes choose flameproofing instead of using safety barriers – what on earth does the guy who is supposed to review these designs do? Does he even understand what’s going on? I can see you’re in a tough spot
The question is, what is the basis for the reviewer’s request to add isolation screens?
You can first ask her why it needs to be added and hear her reasons, but whether what she says is right or wrong, arguing with the reviewer won’t do you any good. My approach to such situations is as follows: 1. The reviewer should write down their comments, clearly stating the issue of adding a safety barrier. 2. Individuals should not modify this drawing; instead, create another version with a safety barrier. So that in the future, no further changes to the diagram will be needed if the safety barrier is removed.
Principle for adding a safety barrier: A safety barrier is only necessary if the field instruments are intrinsically safe; otherwise, it is not required. If the field instruments are explosion-proof, a safety barrier cannot be added, as doing so might prevent the instruments from functioning properly. It’s of no use to draw diagrams of flameproof instruments with safety barriers only.
Intrinsic safety circuits must be equipped with safety barriers, while other circuits may or may not have them. Flameproof two-wire instruments incur a slight increase in cost, but they certainly have advantages rather than disadvantages in practical use. There’s at least one additional step to protect the card holder.
Is the reviewer referring to a safety barrier? ? Is it the usual isolation distributor? ?
I think what the reviewer is referring to is the usual isolation distributor, not the safety barrier used in conjunction with intrinsically safe instruments. Explosion-proof instruments do not require a safety barrier; instead, an isolation distributor is usually used.
The key to this is: who pays you.
