The anti-corrosion measures for heat exchangers mainly involve the use of improved materials; at the same time, optimizing processes and improving operating conditions can also help to control corrosion effectively, keeping its level within acceptable limits. As for the use of coatings for corrosion protection on chemical equipment such as pipes, reactors, and containers, it yields excellent results. However, when applied to shell-and-tube heat exchangers, its effectiveness for corrosion protection is not satisfactory due to the structural characteristics of these heat exchangers.
Material upgrades are primarily used in media environments where existing coatings, platings, or other linings are insufficient to provide protection. After all, such material upgrades come with high cost implications. In environments where operating conditions are not too harsh or temperatures are not too high, heat exchangers often make use of coatings or platings for corrosion prevention; the market size for this application is estimated to be several million square meters per year.
