What is the purpose of turning a centrifugal pump’s impeller by hand, and how is it done?
The purpose of turning the motor is to prevent scratching and sticking, as well as to avoid motor overload that could lead to failures or damage to the motor.

The purpose of a spin test on a pump is to check for any abnormal conditions within the pump, such as stuck rotating parts, blockages caused by debris, rusted components, solidification of the fluid inside the pump, packing that is either too tight or too loose, leaks in the shaft seals, lack of oil in the bearings, or bent shafts. When the rotor is turned 180°, the direction of its bending changes to be opposite to that before rotation, thereby achieving automatic correction of the rotor’s alignment.

The purpose of regularly turning a centrifugal pump’s shaft is to prevent it from bending under the influence of gravity (especially in high-temperature environments). As for the method of turning the pump, for small pumps, one can simply turn the coupling by hand or operate the motor’s cooling fan. For large pumps or special-type pumps, their dedicated turning tools are used for turning them.
