The 3.2 cubic meter gasification furnace using our company’s multi-material slurry has been in operation since October 2011; the three such furnaces have accumulated a total operating time of over 18,000 hours. More than half of the bricks lining the fire-facing part of the furnace have worn out, yet the furnaces are still able to function normally. The surface thermocouple of the gasifier indicates a maximum temperature of about 305°C. I would like to ask how long the cylinder bricks in use can generally last, what are the specific reasons for replacing them, and whether our unit can continue to operate under the current conditions.

If it’s worn down by more than half, it should be replaced promptly. If waiting until it’s completely burned through, the furnace shell will become unusable. A high surface temperature indicates that the insulation effect is no longer effective, resulting in severe heat loss
Currently, other indicators are normal; the wall temperature is also within the specified range. The processes such as loading the furnace are functioning properly, and there are no significant changes in the gas composition or oxygen consumption
The degree of wear on the bricks exposed to the fire is influenced by various factors. The working environment inside the furnace is quite harsh; as long as the wear does not affect the overall structure of the furnace, it does not interfere with its normal operation. However, in the future, the temperature outside the furnace body will continue to rise.
If the bricks on the fire-facing side wear out, the wear resistance of the bricks on the back-supporting side is not as good as that of the fire-facing bricks, which will accelerate the damage to the furnace chamber
Such a wall temperature is already quite high, and it will affect the long-term operation and service life of the gasification furnace.
The main function of the fire-facing bricks (high-chromium bricks) is not insulation, but rather protection against erosion and wear; they serve to protect the insulating bricks behind them – namely the aluminum oxide hollow sphere bricks. The primary role of these insulating bricks is to provide thermal insulation, but they are not resistant to wear, which is why they need protection from high-chromium bricks. This can be seen from their thermal conductivity values: if the high-chromium bricks have been worn down by half, it’s time to replace them immediately, as otherwise the insulating bricks won’t be able to hold up for even a few hours once the high-chromium bricks are completely worn out!
So what criteria do you use to make the change? Usage time? Degree of wear?
We generally consider both time and degree of wear when deciding whether to replace the tiles

Our vaporization furnace has only been in operation for 3,091 hours, and yet we want to replace the bricks on the side of the furnace’s cylinder that faces the flame – those bricks have been worn down by 6 centimeters as a result of erosion. The wall temperature is only 240-270°C.
