It’s my first time designing a product to meet American standards, and I’m not very familiar with the materials required for such applications. The medium temperature is -60°C, and the pressure is 0.7 MPa. What material would be suitable for the bolts? The specified grade is A320 B8 CL2, but this grade isn’t listed in SH3404; the available grades are either A193 B8 CL2 or A320 B8. Is A320 L7 also a viable option?
This post was last edited by hhhxh5712 on 2015-8-11 17:06. A193 B8 CL2 is 304 austenitic stainless steel (equivalent to 0Cr18Ni9 in China). The difference between CL1 and CL2 lies in their different heat treatment conditions and resulting mechanical properties.
A320 is a bolt for low-temperature applications per American standards, while A193 is a bolt for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. A193 B8 CL2 and A320 B8 CL2 are made of the same material, 304 stainless steel; the only difference lies in the heat treatment, with A320 B8 CL2 having better low-temperature impact resistance. The temperature at which A193 B8 CL2 is exempt from impact testing is -196°C; below that temperature, A320 B8 CL2 must be used. So for this, A193 B8 CL2 will suffice. The A320 L7 is an alloy steel bolt, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -100°C.
Using A193B8CL2 stainless steel material for the bolts is fine.
Go through the ASTM series – that way you can understand the relevant standards more thoroughly, right?
