I recently encountered a problem regarding which type of pump – those with axial segmentation or radial segmentation – is easier to maintain. After doing some research, I realized that I didn’t even understand what exactly is meant by axial segmentation or radial segmentation in the context of pumps. That’s why I’m coming here to ask the experts: how can these different segmentation types be distinguished? It would be more illustrative if there were pictures; thank you
For segmentation, it mainly depends on which direction the flange joints of the main body of the equipment are located; in other words, it’s about which direction has the largest flange surface.
Based on your experience as a moderator, which one is easier to maintain, the axial or the radial type?
From a maintenance perspective, large pumps are generally horizontally split, while small pumps are mostly vertically split.
Splitting refers to the pump casing; there are various types of horizontal and vertical splits, as well as different designs for multi-stage and single-stage pumps. Once you have specified the conditions, you can then proceed with comparisons.
In the horizontally split type, the upper cover can be opened without having to move the foot bolts during maintenance, but in the vertically split type, the foot bolts need to be moved; however, these foot bolts still need to be adjusted when disassembling internal components such as the impeller.
For the disassembly and repair of single-stage pumps, horizontal splitting requires more work than vertical splitting； For multi-machine pumps, a horizontal split requires less work compared to a vertical split, making maintenance easier.
