During the first start-up of the hydrogen production plant, it was found that the operating space above the converter was too hot to be used for operations. After the parking period for repairs, the following issues were observed during this restart: 1. The insulation material began to smoke and turn dark yellow at temperatures above 500°C, and smoking was detected again at 600°C at the inlet of the converter ; 2. The temperature in the upper operating area of the converter is too high, preventing operators from carrying out ignition adjustments and pipeline airtightness checks ; 3. There is a problem of some sections of the conversion tubes in the upper part of the converter being exposed to high temperatures and turning red; if fuel gas leaks and accumulates in those areas, an explosive accident could occur. How should the above issues be improved?
Ordinary insulation materials cannot withstand working environments exceeding 500 DEG C; they are typically capable of providing insulation up to around 350 DEG C. For high temperatures, refractory materials such as ceramic fibers or refractory bricks are required.
Both the top of the converter and its walls are lined with heat-resistant insulation material, which helps to keep the wall temperature below 60°C. Any increase in temperature comes from the converter tubes themselves; however, the exposed areas are dead zones where the temperature remains around 300–400 degrees. The space at the top is spacious and well-ventilated – so how could it be impossible to operate there?
