Which sulfur recovery units are currently using the ammonia method for SO2 removal in their exhaust gas treatment, and what is the performance of these systems?
We used a set, it didn’t work; now it’s just useless! Annoying----

The actual performance of these methods is generally average :)
Currently, in principle, the ammonia method, alkali method, ionic liquids, and Kunsoff method are the most thorough approaches for treating Claus off-gases; they are all methods for desulfurizing the flue gases at the post-thermal combustion stage. However, each of these processes has its own fatal shortcomings. The ammonia method faces issues such as ammonia leakage, crystallization, clogging, and corrosion. The alkali method requires a large amount of alkali, and the treatment of concentrated brine poses a problem. Ionic liquids and Konsolf belong to the same category of methods, but acid corrosion is their weak point. At present, various processes are still in the stage of exploration and improvement. It is believed that with the introduction of new emission standards, these processes will meet those standards and be able to operate for extended periods of time. The Scott process has been the best and most widely used method for treating Claus off-gases to date. However, with the implementation of new emission standards, this process becomes less effective, as there is a balance to be maintained in both the reduction-hydrolysis reaction and the absorption tower. Although it is theoretically possible to achieve a state of equilibrium, emissions can exceed permissible levels when fluctuations occur in the system. However, the sulfur import process package used by Yunnan Petrochemical still employs this process, and everyone is looking forward to seeing the verification of its operational performance.

As someone mentioned above, the ammonia-based desulfurization method is relatively mature and stable, with some systems operating well; as for why others don’t perform well, we need to take a look. Since most coal chemical plant boilers use the ammonia-based desulfurization method, it is the most economical approach from a system perspective to use the ammonia method for treating sulfur recovery exhaust gases.
