Why recycle condensate water? 1. Cost savings: Condensate is a valuable resource, and recovering even a portion of it can yield economic benefits; the condensate discharged by just one steam trap is worth recovering as well. If the condensate water cannot be recycled, cold water must be added to the boiler, which increases costs for water treatment, water usage, and fuel. 2. To maximize the boiler’s output, low-temperature boiler feed water reduces the amount of steam produced by the boiler. The lower the feed water temperature, the more heat is required to heat it, which in turn results in less heat being available for steam generation. 3. Quality of boiler feed water: The condensate water is distilled water and contains almost no dissolved solids (TDS). Boilers need to be drained in order to reduce TDS levels; recovering more condensate water means less drainage is required, and thus less capacity loss as well. In summary, based on calculations using some empirical data, and after accounting for costs such as condensate recovery pumps and labor, this approach can help companies reduce their steam costs by 15% to 20%.
Condensate is a relatively clean and recyclable water resource; discarding it without recycling is indeed a waste. It is water that has formed as a result of the condensation of steam used for heating, and it contains some heat. Apart from iron, it can be considered pure distilled water. All that is needed is to remove the iron, and then it can be recycled into the boiler’s demineralized water system for reuse in the boilers.
