I believe everyone’s choice is correct – the fluidized bed is by far the mainstream option. The fluidized bed technology is very complex and requires high energy consumption; wear and tear is one of the major challenges. Additionally, coal tends to coking, and dealing with the waste generated in medium-temperature gasification is quite difficult.
Gas-flow beds are definitely the mainstream technology at present, but their claim of being able to handle a wide range of coal types does not hold up to scrutiny. In China, coals with high ash content account for a large proportion, especially lignite with high ash levels. Currently, only fluidized-bed gasifiers are truly capable of processing such coals, and handling coals with high ash content is particularly challenging in the case of gas-flow beds. Moreover, as fluidized-bed technologies continue to improve, the issues related to waste generation are no longer a major problem; in fact, things are even simpler compared to steam-based gasification processes. Since dry slagging is used, there is only a small amount of wastewater from the subsequent syngas scrubber; the fly ash is burned back in the furnace, leaving only slag. Right or wrong, it’s just a personal opinion; therefore, I’d like to learn more about fluidized beds. I hope fellow sailors will not hesitate to share their knowledge and provide accurate answers.
At present, there are no particularly good gasification methods available for China’s high-calcium, high-sulfur, and high-ash coals, but from the perspective of gasification characteristics, fluidized bed is a suitable gasification technology. But low pressure and long-term operation are the current challenges.

It is important to note here whether gasification is used to produce fuel gas or feed gas. For fuel gas, cost is the main factor to consider ; The value-added of the feed gas is relatively high, so although the cost is a bit higher, it’s not a major issue. When comprehensively evaluating gasification technology, from the current requirements, environmental protection is a key factor, followed by efficiency, cost, and so on. Therefore, gas flow beds or fluidized beds need to be considered in terms of their applications.
